Pain & Movement Therapy

Movement Therapy
Private Sessions

Being a fast-paced, technology driven, goal-oriented culture, we are primarily sedentary. We push or tell the body what to do in a linear fashion, making our movement fragmented, thus causing pain or injuries. Often movement takes place in the large superficial muscles where: there is a lack of body connections; weak or underdeveloped basic movement patterns may exist; past injuries or musculoskeletal pain restricts motion or has generated compensatory movement. This contributes to inappropriate habits that create pain or limit our range of motion.

Working with a Certified Movement Analyst will help evaluate your problem. Using gentle movements that are individually selected to free muscle limitations, you will modify your movement abits, find freedom in the joints, awaken deep muscles, improve the quality of movement and discover a new life where the body expresses a happiness never felt before!

When should Movement Therapy be considered?

> when you have aches and pains; movement impairment or injury or tension/strain/stress on the body due to aging
> when you want to enhance your existing exercise program
> post rehabilitation
> when you want to improve the quality of your daily functional movement

Myofascial Therapy

Myofascial therapy is a light touch therapy for soft tissue pain. All of the body’s tissues that are not bone or cartilage are soft tissues. These include muscle, skin and connective tissue (fascia) covering the muscles throughout the body. Like a ‘pull’ in a sweater, the effects of tension and strain on the body accumulate over time. Abnormal pressures may tighten or bind the fascia to underlying tissues, causing “adhesions”, or dabs of scar tissue that cling to muscle fibers. These adhesions may not show up on x-rays or other scans, but they continue to stiffen joints or contribute to painful movements and may even cause numbness, pain and tingling

Myofascial Therapy is the most effective approach to resolving these problems. The therapist will use movement observation, postural muscle and movement pattern analysis to identify the right treatment for each individual. Bartenieff Fundamentals , gentle stretching and active exercises will be used to improve the movement patterns. Until the myofascia is released, the underlying muscles cannot be properly stretched and movement is restricted.

When should Myofascial Therapy be considered?

> when an x-ray/CTscan/MRI does not show any signs of injury
> when you have aches and pains due to chronic or acute pain
> movement impairment or injury or tension/strain/stress on the body due to aging
> when pain does not go away after 4-6 weeks
> when conventional therapies/medications/surgeries have not been successful in pain relief
> when you want to improve the quality of your daily functional movement
> when you suffer from:
      * back pain
      * sciatica, disc problems
      * patello-femoral syndrome
      * plantar fasciitis
      * head, neck, shoulder pain
      * rotator cuff pain
      * headaches, migraines
      * sports injuries
      * Fibromyalgia
      * arm/elbow/forearm pain (carpal tunnel)

Pain Therapy Treatments

> treatments are usually 1 hour in length
> one (or two) treatments/sessions per week is typical
> three-five treatments should be tried to properly evaluate the effectiveness of Myofascial and/or Movement Therapy
> Myofascial and/or Movement Therapy is non-invasive, safe and effective
> Myofascial and/or Movement Therapy treats the cause of the injury, not only the affected injury site
> treatments are usually 1 hour in length
